On my first day in the psychiatric hospital, a pencil fell from between my mattress and bed frame. Pencils were considered contraband. I used that hidden pencil safely to draw these seven girls, then left it in the same place for the next patient who might need it. I like to imagine this quiet tradition began before me and may continue after me.
